Let’s cry to the Governor because tax payers get to keep THEIR money instead of the local government wasting it. Geez, maybe we will only have 3 people standing around watching 1 person work instead of 5 people standing around.

The biggest complaint I have heard about HB 1001 is that money from Angola and other towns in our county will end up being diverted to the large cities in the state that are in such a financial mess.
What you probably will see is things like parks not being mowed and other "frills" that really make Angola a nice town.
Your jab at the street department was really out of line. Those guys work their tails off.
When it came to working for their community, Twitchell and particularly Mayor Dick Hickman spent a lot of time, personal time, lobbying the Legislature this year, trying to protect the best interests of Angola. If that's what you call crying, let them fill a lake!

I agree, the city workers are underpaid and do work hard, it was more of a jab at city government than the workers. It should be pretty simple, less money for the city they cut expenses, just like at home, I can't ask my boss for more money I just cut back on things I don't need.

http://www.agecon.purdue.edu/crd/localgov/Topics/Essays/Tax_Reform_Households_0308.htm If I did this right, this gives a pretty good idea of just how much HB1001 would save or cost you in pretty much the original form. At 900 pages it is likely most legislators have no idea what kind of monster they may have created.

I bet if you asked home owners and said 1. Would you not like to lose your house to a tax sale but have the park with tall grass? or 2. Would you like a nicely mowed park but lose your house to a tax sale because you can't pay your property taxes? I'm going out on a limb here and say most home owners would pick option number 1.

You lose your home to tax sale...1. Because you are not responsible and have gotten in over your head or 2. You gambled on it and lost. Now you want to cry to the governement to come bail you out. If you have a 300,000 dollar home then you need to pay 300,000 dollar tax bills. I suppose that there is a number 3. Medical situation that creates a large debt. In reality number three will get most anyone regardless of how big or small tax bills are.
The economy and market are as flexible as the human waist line. If people aren't smart enough to think about this and consider it when buying then they need to get a book on history. Those that fail to pay attention to it, are doomed to repeat it.
With all the hits that schools are taking, I hate to see what it is going to cost me to enroll my kids this year as a result of this great property tax reform.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul has never been a real good idea. It gets old to listen to the whinning of those that do not have enough self dicipline to maintain the basic needs. Now my sales tax goes up and I would bet before its said and done, I am going to get hit wth something else along the way.
The "Frills" that will be lost are the same "Frills" that attract new business owners, people that relocate and wish to live here and new industry. It can also be the same "Frills" that retain people to stay here as well as businesses and industry.
The sell in this great tax reform is in the idea that it strengthens our economy but in reality it weakens our communities.
I fear the outcome of this entire thing and find it difficult to believe that any good will come to any place other than Indianapolis.
Deb Twitchell has good reason to cry a river because she is smart enough to see that the numbers in/from Indianapolis are not adding up and those of us in the outlying communities are going to pay dearly for it.

Angola Mayor Richard Hickman has written a letter to the editor in response to this thread, published in today's Herald-Republican:

I simply cannot compose the post I want to, because no matter how I word it, the powers that be will (and should) delete it for being slander. Let's just say that it involved the name "yrufat" and leave it at that.
Curious, "yrufat" - what was the inspiration for that name?
Mayor Hickman does have one thing wrong, though - I think even many of our conservative posters didn't think "yeah, right on!" when they read the original post.

Yep, me too. Let's see, property taxes nearly doubled and now we're supposed to be happy that they are being reduced by a third. Sounds like what the oil companies do with gas prices. On top of that they raise the sales tax by 17%. No we're not getting screwed, we sure as heck aren't getting kissed.

One of our arcade players has the username monkeybutt - suppose he or she would have started the thread.
I run into the same problem sometimes when I'm writing my column. Sometimes screen names can be a bit confusing when you use them in print to ID people, but they are that person's identity.
