View Full Version : Trees Cut Down on North Williams Street

WHY are all of the trees on the east side of North Williams Street from E. Maumee to Mill cut down?
Is this the way to build a bicycle path for our health, by cutting down the trees (the lungs of the world)?
The powers who be were talking about the city losing its canopy.
Well DUH!! Will they live long enough for a replacement tree to grow and provide shade.

Not sure where you're from, but in Auburn they are on a cutting frenzy, too. They don't want to bother with trimming the trees out of the power lines all the time, so they down them.
Even trees on private property along Auburn Drive / CR 48 had to come down. Now, the property owner has no say, even if it's their only shade tree on the property, it had to come down. And they don't do stump removal, either; that's the property owner's responsibility to have that removed.
They can't stop you from planting another tree in it's place, however.
They took down quite a few along Auburn drive this year by Auburn Gear and the adjacent ball park. :ridinghorse:

I'll bet those trees were there before the power lines.
Where our tree board members? Of course they are probably as frustrated as the house owners and general public.

They did this in k-ville too. It seems that AEP has a new policy. It is called 40 foot wide swath of destruction around all power lines. I don't even have power lines on my side of the street and they tried to cut mine down. Luckily I found out , and removed their cut down marker.
This is interesting, I called them to get trees trimmed around my power lines and was told it was my problem. I guess when the wind drops a limb on the line it will be their problem.

At this point, maybe the cities should start forcing the power companies to start burying their cables as needed.
I mean, just a block at a time, even if it takes five or ten years.
Just imagine how much nicer our downtowns would look without poles or hanging wires everywhere?

All new developments in Angola the power, phone and cable tv are buried in the right a way.

So much for Angola being a Tree City USA! Maybe the board who designates that should know about this.
REMC has always trimmed my trees around the powerlines for free. They don't always get there right away, but it's free and they do a nice job.

Rather writing OUT LOUD here but what an new Chopper Service COULD of done was lifted those trees out (as some nursery business trucks are equipped to do but man I'm talk'n RED WOODS :) here) and transplant them in peoples yards with NO trees.
Per chance that idea is picked up on and an new business started PRETTY please remember this low incomer with an small financial donation (private message me) from how you first learned it,thank you :trytofly:

I see today they are pouring concrete on Williams street for the bike path. The path is 8 foot wide. The project will be really nice when completed. More trees can be planted for the next generation. The bike path will make it alot safer for cyclists and walkers going North near Williams & North Wayne st. instead of being in traffic.
Sometimes old stuff has to be removed to make way for progress.

Sounds good, but let's see if they actually plant more trees. Trees have to be watered, trimmed, mowed around, too much hassle. Easier to let someone else worry about the tree population.

This may come as a bit of a surprise to those who know me as the bleeding-heart liberal that I am...
But personally, I hate trees for many of the very same reasons Peaches defined.
I am all for saving the rainforest (we use that oxygen up here, too, after all), and parks are nice (I suppose). But for residential living, I would much rather have a naked yard than one encumbered with trees and all the twigs, leaves, nuts, bark, squirrels and anything else they drop. Trees destroy sidewalks, too, and let's not forget all the problems they cause during rain and ice storms- how many power outages are the result of falling timber after all?
And as far as "Tree City USA" crap goes, I would rather see Angola be known as "Job City USA" than anything else.

Sorry I am so late adding to this thread.
The trees are coming out to make way for the new bike/pedestrian trail.
The other side of Williams appears to have fewer trees, but the grade is much more steep.
Just talked to city hall. People who have had trees removed from their yards have been compensated and if they want to plant new trees in their yards they may do so. Trees removed from the rights-of-way will not be replaced because there is little room between the trail and the street.
If you take a good look at where the trail will be traveling, few trees will have to be removed.

A tree in your yard shelters your house and lowers your cooling bills, for example, in the summer. There are many benefits over a naked yard. Besides, that's just naughty.
If the power companies would bury ALL of their cables, trees wouldn't cause any power outages.
And you may very well have lost your liberal badge for not being a tree hugger. What about all the little critters who live in them? Save the birds and squirrels!!!!!! :ridinghorse:

Squirrels are rats with bushy tails and birds use my car like a skeeball court.

Property owners, when you replace a tree, replace it with a fruit tree. Why waste your time with something you can't eat?

Yes, but if there are no trees they will move into your attic.

Fruit trees are messy, and they attract kids who like to throw fruit at everything.

Then if we plant a fruit tree in EK's yard, the kids can throw the fruit at the birds on his car.

Geese EK we'd have to plant kumquat plants on every corner of every block in Goly just to replace all the oxygen you put in that one:)

I think the city fails to open their eyes and realize that the trail will be rarely used to the state park. The city can't even put in a sidewalk north of the railroad on North Wayne, why would anyone hold their breath anticipating anything from the city leaders. Sorry, another failure waiting to happen in my eyes, big waste of money (again).

I don't believe you need to ride all the way to Pokagon, but if a person did want to then they have that option. If you take the time to look at where the bike trail goes, it goes North of the railroad track crossing behind Wal-Mart and the other stores, making it easy access to the stores. It's just like a road, I-69 goes North and it goes South, but it doesn't mean I have to drive on it till I reach the end. And besides this is a county project as well.

That sounds neat, wait until those in electric wheel chairs learns of that. Finally,a way to the Walmart store and area.

Heck it's 8-foot wide, just think of all the golf carts that could use it,but I'm sure no public motorized vehicles will be allowed on it.

I see the Bike Path is coming along nicely. I see it goes through the woods starting from the new Bridge on East Harcourt Dr. going behind Pebbles and comes out of the woods behind Walmart. That will be a nice walk through the woods where you'll maybe get to see some wildlife.
They've got alot of concrete poured on Williams Street.
It goes right past the YMCA,that will be nice.

City-wide bike/hike trail
This long awaited project has become reality this year with construction going on all summer. In 2002 the City was awarded a grant for $1,000,000 toward this project and many City residents have donated the use of their right of way and property to make this project happen. Completion of this trail and the County's portion (in the planning stage) will enable you to walk or bike all the way to Pokagon State Park . Benches and resting areas are in the long-term plan and if you'd like to donate funds towards benches or the trail construction, please give us a call at 260-665-2514.

Good news is that today Tuesday November 4th most of the asphalt for the walking and bicycle path was laid and the path over the Harcourt Bridge is marked out on both sides. I'am a little worried about no barrier between the walkers and bicyclists as they go over the bridge, there's just a yellow stripe.
