Over the weekend, I saw an article about Times Co. threatening to shutter the Globe if their Union doesn't give into a bunch of concessions. The article can be found here: http://www.boston.com/business/ticker/2009/04/times_co_threat.html
But, the fate of the Globe isn't really what I wanted to ask about here. Pro-sports are tightly wedded to their local papers for coverage. Most other media rely on on the local newspapers coverage for much of their content. Radio, Internet, TV, cable cite newspaper content on a routine basis.
What will happen with sports news coverage on the national level if the local newspapers start folding?
Of all of the big newspaper closings I've heard about, this is really the first one where this could be the main paper in the area. Seattle, Denver, Cincinatti all have had other papers and it was the second paper that folded. So it hasn't been a big issues up until now.
