Cowboys destroy Philly. Baltimore hands the Patriots their backsides. Jets beat down Cinci, and Arizona is stomping the Pack. Everything is going according to plan.
But the next round is the tricky one. Do I think the Colts will beat Baltimore? Yes. But it will not be easy. As opposed to San Diego, who should trounce the Jets.
As for the NFC, hard tellin'. The Vikings should manhandle the Cowboys. Who knows what Saints team will show up. I just don't trust 'em, so take Arizona.
Beyond that, Colts vs SanDiego, SanDiego wins. Vikings vs Cardinals, Vikings win.
Leading to San Diego vs Minnesota. Vikings win, Favre retires for good.

I want the Colts to win it all, but they've put together wins with bits of tin foil, duct tape, some twine...
The Chargers are the real deal on both sides of the ball. I just don't trust the Colts.
As for the Jets, they've got two good pieces in place: running and defense. But they're going nowhere with a rookie QB. Its just not going to happen.

The Vikings should manhandle the Cowboys.
Manhandle??
Have you watched the Cowboys lately??
They are going to be in Favre's face all-day long.
And the Colts vs. Ravens?? After watching that D today I predict an upset.
(and YOU know the "Bolts" are gonna take it all. (C'mon, just admit it. No such thing as jinxes)

I've watched all the games. The Cowboys are playing well, but they're overplaying their talent. The Vikings are the real deal. The Cowboys are not.
The Ravens did that outdoors vs. a cruddy Patriots team. The Colts offense at home is vastly superior to New England without Welker.

Really??
I see a talented team that has finally played up to their potential.
Above average QB, OL, RB (Three studs),TE, and DL.
Solid LBs, WRs and secondary.
We shall see. it's a coin-flip for me.
I just thought manhandle was a bold statement.
But ya' could be right. If I was such a great prognosticator I'd be driving a nicer car.

Packers almost undid you before you got started. That was a wild game. After all that offense the defense wins in OT.

oh, I completely agree. But the Vikings defense is built to stop the run. So you'll see Reggie Bush have less success against the Vikings 2nd rated run defense, while Brees and the plentiful receiving core exploit the 19th ranked passing defense.
Comparing the top-producing offense of the Saints against the 14th ranked offense of the Cardinals is also important.
You'll see Brees with 300 yards passing.
It will be close, yes. But the Saints are too powerful of a pass team for the Vikings to stop.
Of course, this is all my highly uneducated opinion. :)

The Chargers were on an 11 game winning streak. I'd call that momentum and probably more momentum than the Jets have going. I guess that was the point I was trying to make.
LuciusBeebe
01-19-2010, 05:29 PM
Momentum has nothing to do with the Jets' success.
The Jets got into the playoffs because their last 2 opponents rested their starters, and the teams they needed to lose happened to lose.
The Jets won at New England because Tom Brady felt the need to throw them the ball, and the Patriots left their defense in the locker room.
The Jets won at San Diego because a pro-bowl kicker who hadn't missed 3 field goals all season decided to miss 3 in one game.
The Jets have a good defense. The Jets have a good running game. The Jets also have had the luxury of facing 2 teams that shot themselves in the foot. That ends this weekend. Sanchez will throw multiple picks, and that rushing game will be shut down. Its going to be like Kansas City in '06, when they predicted Larry Johnson would get over 150 yards, and the Colts held him under 50. Indianapolis by 13.
As for New Orleans/Minnesota, go with Minnesota. The defense that shut down the Cowboys will have a harder time this week, but more importantly the Saints defense will be exposed as the pretenders that they are. A-Pete has two TDs, Favre has 2 TDs. Minnesota by 10.

Yes, because the Vikings would have been so much better off without him this season. His performance this season should more than put to rest any questions of whether or not he should have come back. He could probably even put another respectable run together next year if he wants. Personally, I want him to retire so his numbers stop going up and Manning has a chance to start to catch up on some of them.

Favre is awesome. The Vikings win that game if they don't FUMBLE THE BALL SIX TIMES! Man, I am sick of the talk that Favre cost them the game. They doubled up the Saints in first downs, they beat them in yardage by 200 yds, their time of possession was dominant... so wha happen? 5-1 turnover margin. Egads. I rarely yell at the television, but the 4th, 5th and 6th fumbles had me in a fit.
I was left with a deep admiration for Favre's toughness. And a deep anger at the Saints' cheapness. To quote Giamotti in Cindarella Man, "why don't you just hit him with a chair?!!"

Let's also not forget that the coach allowed the team take a penalty for 12 men in the huddle after a timeout that pushed them further out of field goal range, after calling a bunch of safe running plays on the final drive after Favre had moved them down the field with great passes.
Yeah, Favre threw an ill-advised pass. But his coach put him in that spot. And for the guys that keep saying he should have scrambled on that last play instead of throwing; the dude thought he broke his ankle. He wasn't scrambling for anything.

He had been hit so much and so hard it's a wonder he was still in the game. Farve is a class act and one of the last tough qb's in the league. Manning or breeze could not take that punishment, and as bad as I hate to say it, if the saints get to manning the way they got to farve, they will sideline him.

No doubt that will be the Saint's intent. Colts were successful in protecting Manning last time against the Saints. Also Manning releases the ball much quicker than Farve did, so I believe that will be in his favor.

But if the Saints win, I would like some beads from Bourbon Street. The WonderCow is not embarrassed to show her udders.

Hannah, You've got a great record on predictions. I'm concerned about Freeney's injury.
Being a proud Hoosier, I've always been a big Colts fan. There may be an earthquake in Spencerville due to all the jumping up and down in our living room on Sunday. :)
Should we have to face the unmentionable and the Saints do win, I will say, it couldn't be lost to a better team.

Who dat?! Who dat?! Who dat guy beatin' up dem saints?
Its Peyton Manning.
And he's killing you by 13.
Colts win. Sports pundits begin talking 'best ever' about Peyton Manning.
I was griping about this back in '08, but it stands. Years ago, they questioned whether Peyton would ever win the big one. Now they're asking "best ever"? I know they have to talk about something, but dang, man. Manning's statistics on a graph are amazing. Astounding.
Drew Brees became the second quarterback EVER to pass for 4,000 yards in 4 consecutive seasons. Peyton Manning has done it for 10 consecutive seasons.
With Peyton Manning, the Colts have won more games in a decade than any other team in the history of the NFL.
He has yet to miss a game.
Statistically speaking, Peyton Manning is already the best QB to ever play the game. For people that say championships define greatness, I ask why Dan Marino is held in higher regard than Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson.
Peyton Manning is the best to ever play. He's playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

I have been joking with my regular clients all week. Most are for the Saints.
Of course, I tell them, NO NO, the Colts are going to win.
Long story short, (long week short),
I said, "one of us are going to be very disappointed Monday morning" and it is not going to be me. ..
GO COLTS!!!!! this is just so very exciting...

I don't see how any reasonable person can honestly argue againt Manning as the best ever at his position. It isn't a matter of opinion.
He has performed at a whole different level than his contemporaries for years. He has a Super Bowl under his belt and is likely going to add a second. AND he is far from being done. It just isn't a contest between him and the rest of the pack.
The problem with many of us fans is that we become invested in our team of choice and we filter the accomplishments of players from teams we may not necessarily like through our biases. I am a life-long Steelers fan, but there is no doubt in my mind that Peyton Manning is a better QB than Bradshaw, Montana, Elway or Marino ever were.

What is amazing to me is watching how Manning plays the game. He is as close to calling his own plays as it gets right now. In a copycat league, no one is able to do what he does.

It's a result of his dedication to studying the game since he was young- surely a result of being Archie's kid. It's obvious he just simply understands the game on a level that others at his position aren't equipped to.
Certainly there are others in the league with superior physical attributes, but no one can match his cerebral approach to the game. Some would argue in favor of raw talent over intellect but that argument fizzles in the face of the results Manning has produced.

I enjoyed listening to an interview with Eli Manning this afternoon where he remembered going to the Saint's games with his Father and Payton and one of Payton's friends. Being the little brother he said I was never allowed to bring one of my own friends and I never quite understood that, but Dad would instruct Payton to keep an eye on me, make sure I got a hot dog and a coke and to NOT lose me in the crowd.
Personally, I'm impressed with their family life and their memories. Now look what new memories they are continuing to build. One heck of a great family. I also heard in Vegas you can bet on how many times Peyton's Father will be seen from the sky box. LOL!!

Evil, you like to question the value of pro sports, why tax payers are asked to foot any of the bill for a new stadium.
Consider the following. (http://njmonthly.com/articles/lifestyle/people/all-the-eyeballs.html)
Aside from the money generated in the regular season, superbowls by themselves generate hundreds of millions of dollars nationwide, and even more in the cities they take place. Indianapolis is set to host the superbowl in a few years. Why shouldn't taxpayers pay for part of something that will generate hundreds of millions of dollars?
Football is good for the economy, in short.

Okay, I understand there is alot of support for the underdogs here (The Saints). Should we loose (God Forbid)...I can't think of a better team to loose to. They are both excellent teams.
IF the Colts win there may be an earthquake in NE Indiana when my husband and I finish pounding the table and jumping up and down in our living room....gosh, I hope we don't create that big of a disturbance. :)

That was a gutsy call. They don't pull that off and they're giving Manning a short field to work with. But they did pull it off and kept Manning on the sideline while they took the lead. Big turning point in the game, in my opinion.

"Happy feet" is a term used to describe what happens when a quarterback begins to panic. They drop back, go to their first read... nothing, they go to their second read... nothing, then the clock in their head gets close to 3 or 4 seconds and the feet begin to tappa-tappa-tappa. Its an "oh shi- oh shi- oh shi-" thing.
"I've heard it for years," Colts center Jeff Saturday said. "Everybody talks about disrupting Peyton's rhythm, getting him hit, making him nervous, making him get happy feet, all of those things. The best thing about it is, Gregg doesn't play. He'll dial them up, but his players have to play. All of the talking before and after will have nothing to do with it."

You and I have a different defination of 'happy feet'. There are some QB's that plant their feet firmly as they prepare their pass. A few such as Manning raises one foot, then the other, almost like a dance as he determines where he is passing. My defination of 'happy feet' does not include anything to do with panic. My first time to be introduced to the term was listening to Mike and Mike in the morning with my husband. They declared Manning to be a 'happy feet' QB and how well it works for him. (that was during our winning season).
Same words...different defination between us LB.

Its not my definition, its a football term.
Yeah, I've heard explanations like he's always had happy feet and it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I don't buy that. I watch the games, and the happy feet were not there in the Jets and Ravens game. They weren't there in the first quarter against the Saints. But then, and I groaned aloud when I saw them, the happy feet showed up and it all went down the toilet.

LB,
I'm glad you drew my attention to this term again. On the show I had watched on Mike & Mike they had laughed and said how well Mannings happy feet were working for him. The only time I had ever paid attention to that term was then. Since you brought it up, I have googled other references and I see what you are saying also.
At the time they discussed his happy feet we were on total winning streak and commenting on how well his happy feet were working for him. After reviewing other uses of this term, I see what you are saying. I'm sure not a football wizzard, I only became interested in it once I became a Colts fan (about 10 yrs ago).
Now I've got to watch yesterday's game again for what you have just mentioned about him not having the happy feet early on....I really hadn't noticed. You know it's going to hurt to watch it again...but...I've got to now. :)
