The correct comparison isn't Disney's Pocahontas, but Disney's Bambi, and Avatar is Bambi on steroids! If a whole generation became environmentalists because they saw the hunters kill Bambi's mother, then think what kind of impact the gunship attack on Home Tree is having! No, the film isn't anti-American. (The Sioux at Little Big Horn were Americans, too.) Nor is it anti-military. (The Na'vi aren't exactly pacifists, you know.) And if it's subversive of anything, it's subversive of the arrogance of power. The best writers of speculative fiction such as H.G. Wells (The War of the Worlds) make us place ourselves in the position of the victims of the darkest results of our own smug assumptions and ask the question: "There, how do you like them apples?" On that score, Avatar is a titanic success.
