Well somebody reset the bar for mediocrity. Or at least that would be what ESPN would have you believe on Sportscenter this morning. But even though the Phillies have lost more games than any other profession sporting team on this continent, I think we need to put this loft feat into a little bit of perspective with the comparrison to the basement dwellers of the other leagues.

1) The Phillies are one of the oldest teams in profession baseball. They have probably been in existance longer than most of the other major sports leagues combined.

2) More baseball games are played in MLB each season than in any other sport (162?). It would take an NFL team 6 years to match the grand efforts at mediocrity the Tigers achieved in just a single season just a few years ago. It would also take them 10 years to play the number of games played in a single MLB season.

3) If their all time wining percentage was a batting average they would be kings of the diamond at .468

I was curious how many World Series the Phillies have won and according to Wikipedia it's exactly one, in 1980. I don't know if that's better or worse than the Cubs, who've won more in their franchise history but none in the last 99 years.

I don't know - are there any professional sports teams with any kind of history that have yet to win a title in their sport? Having grown up near Detroit, I know the Lions have never made it to the Super Bowl but they did win a few pre-Super Bowl championships.

I can tell you that they have some die-hard fans. At least since 2003, they have exceeded the major league average (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teams/philattn.shtml). Keep in mind they fielded some pretty sorry teams during that period.

Now with Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Shane Victorino they have a team that is entertaining and can score some runs. They just need Steve Carlton back on the mound to provide a little help. :)
