    Default Top Movies Lists

Since this is the time of year when so many of these lists are released, I was curious if anyone would like to offer up their favorite movies list. Here is mine, in no particular order...

    Goodfellas
    Young Frankenstein
    Blazing Saddles
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    This Is Spinal Tap
    Raging Bull
    The Godfather
Cape Fear (The Robert Mitchum one...)
Singin' In the Rain (Go figure...)
    Casablanca
    Apocalypse Now
    It Happened One Night
    Unforgiven
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    MASH

Wow, that's a tough question. Here's my shot at it, but I'm sure I'll think of more later. (It's in no particular order.)

    "Star Wars" original trilogy
"Star Trek" - "Wrath of Khan" and "The Voyage Home"
    "Serenity"
    "The Producers" (original)
    "Blazing Saddles"
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
    "Indiana Jones" trilogy
    "Galaxy Quest"
    "When Harry Met Sally ..."
    "The Sound of Music"
    "Gone With the Wind"
    "Lord of the Rings" trilogy
    "Ed Wood"
    "Edward Scissorhands"
    "Casablanca"
    "Moulin Rouge"

Not much point in adding my list to yours... most of my favorites appear on either list.

However, I just had to whine about Grail being listed. Don't get me wrong. I like that movie, too, but so many people know that film and assume its the sum total of Python, when The Meaning of Life was so much better (in my opinion).

I don't agree with "Meaning of Life" being better, but I do agree that too many people miss "Meaning of Life" and "Life of Brian" because all they hear about is "Grail." My biggest complaint with "Grail" is just the usual- it becomes "cool" to like it and then everybody walks around quoting it to death and it almost makes you dislike it out of spite. But not quite...

I think it should be legal to garrote anyone one who says "Ni" in a high, squeaky voice.

However, both my 4 and 17 year olds think it is hilarious when I say "I fart in your general direction."

That, and Kaniggets are okay, but only because they haven't been done NEARLY to death as "Ni".

God, I just said "Ni" in my head right now and I feel like punching myself.

I also get a chuckle when my wife makes me do something I don't want to do and I pull out the old "Help, I'm being oppressed!"

As much as I love Holy Grail, Meaning of Life is my favorite. Mr. Creosote gets me every time.

I still give Grail the (slight) edge, but I loved the Organ Donor scene in Meaning In Life especially (in addition to Creosote obviously..."It's waffer theen")

See, now you guys have "Always look on the bright side of life" stuck in my head. I'll probably be whistling it for the next week (Sorry James).

... always look on the light side of death...right before you draw your terminal breath....

See, I really should have put "Life of Brian" on my list, because I actually like it a little better than "Holy Grail." "Meaning of Life" is also VERY funny, but I think it tends to rest a little too heavily on crudity and has a few really slow parts. Mr. Creosote is hilarious, but I can hardly get people to watch the movie with me because that part grossed them out too much. (My friends are apparently wussy.) "Life of Brian" is probably the most clever of those three movies, and "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" is a song I have quoted/sung to people on numerous occasions.

I still remember galloping around the halls of DeKalb High School with my friends, banging together two empty halves of a coconut. (Yes, we were THOSE kids.) We used to quote the movie a LOT in high school, but now we mostly recite the "witch-burning" dialogue ("She turned me into a newt!" "A newt?" "I got better."), the bridge of death ("What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?" "African or European?"), and the Black Knight. Oh, and "I fart in your general direction" and other insults from that same part have come in handy MANY times.

It's hard for me to come up with a list. There are a lot of movies that clump together. Most of my favorites have already made the lists below (star wars, lord of the rings, indiana jones, Monty Python - why is it many of my favorites come in threes...hmmmm)

I really liked the first Lethal Weapon.
The first Die Hard (the last was also very good but probably wouldn't make a "top" list)

Grumpy and Grumpier Old Men will make me always laugh even if I watch them a million times.

Some that would be on my list that would be nowhere near a "best movies" list by anyone else:

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" - I thought the battle of wits between Michael Caine and Steve Martin was classic. (OK, maybe not "wits" in Martin's case.) I haven't seen the stage musical they've done since.
"Strange Brew" - I think I saw it about 50 times in high school.
"Better Off Dead" - John Cusack as a high school guy who gets dumped by his girlfriend. I could relate.

I left off a "group" of movies by Christopher Guest. Best in Show, Waiting For Guffman, A Mighty Wind etc. I love the ensemble he uses and the approach to making movies- with a story and mostly ad-libbed dialogue. Some are better than others, but Guffman and Best in Show were great in my opinion.
