To be a citizen, you must speak english. That doesn't mean that if you are not a citizen you do not speak english.

I'm quite aware of the loop, Night Fire. I'm simply saying that its pretty silly to say that someone speaking spanish is probably illegal, when its just as likely that a hispanic person speaking english could be illegal. I parle un peu, but it doesn't make me french.

Um, they may be bilingual and choose to speak in Spanish. That's not relevant to interacting with police, since they could obviously speak in English if they chose, but is to the talk about stereotyping or assuming things about others.

I don't want to name employers but i know of several rather unsafe factories in the area that only employee illegals... no reports to the state etc... I really don't want to say in open forum someone might be unemployed and start a hate campaign

I think the point that SusieFila made was that: many deaf people are mistakenly arrested for non compliance, because the officers do not understand them, AND because they are US citizens-more attention should be paid to their rights then to those of illegals.

What is the exact charge for "non compliance" ? I have met and communicated with quite a few of deaf people and it did not take but a second for them to communicate that fact to me. I really do not believe a deaf person has been arrested because they could not hear.

There is only 2 OSHA guys in Indiana and one is only part time, The Department of labor is not much better.. basically no death or serious injuries no investigations... exception is if their is a child labor violation then someone will check it out quickly

We could go into a whole other thread on that one. My wife's job description suddenly got changed on her with no warning about nine months after we moved here - actually, the employer basically cut out a bunch of stuff they initially promised when they hired her - and we were basically told that was how it worked and we had to deal with it, even by people on our side.

We are all out of the loop since this is supposed to be about a nice police officer being able to use sign language and why the police don't learn it so they can communicate.

Speaking a foreign language is hardly a qualification for being here illegally.

As for cops learning sign language, I think some departments do some basic training in this, but unles you use it enough, I would imagine it would be like any language skill.

Maybe because they don't interact with the deaf often enough to justify the time and effort needed to learn sign language.
