    Default Volunteer Opportunities

After reading a post on an earlier thread, I thought of the Silver Linings that could come when people are laid off, giving them more time to spend with their children, grandchildren and for volunteering opportunities.

I emailed Cindy Bevington and asked her if she could include some volunteer opportunities in her silver lining column, not sure if she will but wanted to throw this out to all of you.

This afternoon I received a private message from a regular fence poster stating that they were getting laid off and wondered where they could volunteer to give back to the community, what a great idea.

So I am going to throw this out to all of you and ask for your help to find volunteer opportunities in different communities, would you please help us on this?

I have two organizations that I volunteer on a regular basis, so I will tell you my passions.

Of course, Steuben County Humane Society at 1700 N 200 W
Angola, IN 46703, telephone number is 260-833-2877. They have many opportunities for volunteers, Dog Walkers Club, Cat Cuddlers Club, volunteer for kennel staff, volunteer coordinator assistant, volunteer to help with off-site events, and foster programs. There are other opportunities so if you have something in mind, just ask them.

They also have a Volunteer Incentive Program where pet owners can volunteer at the shelter and they will pay for a spay/neuter for your pet. Call them for details.

The other organization that I volunteer for is IOPO, Indiana Organ Procurement Organization. I do programs at schools, BMV and various other venues educating the public about organ donation. If you are interested in this please private message me and I can hook you up with training and I always welcome help with my events.

Okay, if you are so inspired, please add things that you know about. I know of others and will add them as I think of them.

Thanks for your help and thanks for making a difference.

    Opportunities to volunteer:

    Project Help of Steuben County
    260-665-9697

    SonLight Community Church
    260-665-9456
I know that they used to have a group of men that would work on cars for like single mothers if their car broke down.

    Rise, Inc.
    260-665-9408

Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County
    260-665-3362

    Steuben County Council on Aging
    260-665-9856

You would have to call these organizations to find out if they could use your services.

    Thanks for making a difference!!!

Someone on another thread was complaining about bullying in the schools. Part of the reason bullies get away with as much as they do is that there are so many more kids than adults in schools. Volunteering at a school, just to stand in the lunch room or bathroom or hallway or playground or other bullying hotspots would help a LOT of kids.

Black Pine always needs volunteers to help care for the animals, to clean and to improve the grounds.

The Wreck uses adults to supervise after school.

Nursing homes love to have people come spend one on one time with residents.

The Northeastern Center is always looking for people who would like to volunteer as drivers. That might be especially good for those who are unemployed. They reimburse for drives at 46 cents a mile!

The Steuben County Literacy Coalition; I'm sure they'd love to have volunteers to help teach others how to read, they sure helped my ex-husband a few years ago. And I don't know if the newer owner's would allow this or not, but I use to volunteer housekeeping, at the Turning Point Shelter (it feels great to help out, too!)! Hope this is what you mean by helping.

Would you happen to know of any organization where I'd be able to volunteer, right from my home? I have a son, cannot afford a babysitter (during non-school hours) and have no vehicle, but would love to help, from home, if I could!

That is a great question but I don't know of anything right off. Perhaps you could call one of the organizations that are listed, offer your services and maybe they could think of something for you. Perhaps something like folding newsletters, stuffing envelopes, if you use Excel or Word-perhaps some computer work, I am just throwing out ideas but they may have a need. Thanks for offering. I am sure that there is a need someplace. If I think of anything or if I need anything like this in my volunteering, I will remember your offer.

Does anyone have electrical skills or know an electrician that might want to offer to help the Steuben County Humane Society? They have/had a small job that they needed help with and it would be great if we could address their need. If anyone knows of someone or if you can help please call them at 833-2877 and ask to talk with or leave a message for Ken Till who is the President of the Board and offer your help.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Just wanted an update on anyone that looked into volunteering-has anyone had success in a volunteer match for your skills?

I'm a little late getting in on this thread, but I have volunteered at The Bargain Shop in Kendallville for almost 12 years now and we are ALWAYS looking for new volunteers.
You can volunteer as many or as few days as you want and can work all day or half a day as you want. Just feel free to walk in and talk to anyone working there. They can take your name and number and contact the right people
Or you can call the First Christian Church in Kendallville and they can put you in touch with the right people.

Call your local American Legion, they are ALWAYS needing people to drive Veterns to their appointments at the VA Hospital in Ft. Wayne.

4-H can always use volunteers. What better use of your time than helping to lead kids down a good path? Contact your County Extension Office. They also need volunteers to monitor the exhibit halls during the fair.

Maybe this could be an idea for Cindy for the silver lining column to list all of the volunteer opportunities? What do you think? Should I email and direct her to this thread?

Both suggestions sound worthy of a mention in Silver Linings to me. (my 2 cents worth)

Or Richard Pickard in Garrett at 357-1918 who has recently orchestrated getting two brand new DAV Vans for the 4 NE/IN Counties like the Elkart/Southbend area has had for years that makes 5 days a week Fort Wayne V.A. Hospital trips and to Marion and Indianapolis V.A. Hospitals when needed. Besides vans, insurance and gas is supplied volunteer Drivers even get $10..00 a day for eats or whatever as well another picture I.D. (V.A.) card. A good opportunity for those who never got to serve to mingle right in the middle of business with those who did.
