The worst thing I've seen is a guy around auburn who lets his dog ride on the tool box of his truck. He even ties him to the box with bailer twine. I guess if the dog falls off the twine will break - so he'd just die from the fall rather than a broken neck. I had to follow him the other day - going down 7th street. I was so afraid for the dog and so mad at the owner. Of course, the dog, not knowing the danger his owner was putting him in, seemed totally happy. But, I just couldn't help but getting really mad at the stupid owner!

I thought that I answered James question, I must not have saved my post.

Thank you, Night Owl, I could not have said it better myself. Very good information.

lyndas, I am also so afraid for dogs when I see them in the back of pick up trucks. There is a guy that rides around Angola with his dog on the back of a motorcycle thing-not sure that it is called-it is bright yellow, has anyone seen it? His dog does have goggles but I have not been able to tell if the dog is strapped in or what. It looks dangerous to me.

Many years ago, one of my friends lost his dog. I asked him where, and he told me somewhere along old 8 between Auburn and Avilla. Too make a long story short, we all piled into his truck and went looking for her. I spotted her next to a house on the north side of the road not far from the Blue moon. She was being petted and comforted by the people in the house there. I never said anything to my friend, but I know he knew he screwed up. I never saw him ride her in the back of a pickup again. Thank god she wasn't badly hurt.

    Denali,

We give our little shorthaired dachshound a tablet once a month called Sentinal to protect against heart worm and it is also supposed to kill any flea eggs on the dog. It doesn't actually kill the adult living fleas.

We have a spray called Codex that is supposed to kill fleas on contact that we use in addition about once a week. Our dog is primarily a house dog, however we do give him walks outdoors and let him play in the yard for a couple hrs a day when the weather is nice.

Question: IF we miss any fleas and he brings them into the house...what do you recommend to prevent this? Also, can humans catch fleas from their dog? (please say no)

Don't worry about catching fleas, they will catch you. And don't blame the dog, fleas go after any meal they can get.

Yes, people can get fleas from dogs. I have read that fleas prefer animals to humans but they will get a meal wherever they can.

I use Sentinel, also and believe it or not, with all the dogs that I have in and out of my home I have not had a flea problem, ever. Knock on wood.

I do not use Frontline or any chemical on my dogs. I did order and have on hand just in case I need it something called, Flea 'n Tick B Gone to get rid of fleas and ticks without harmful pesticides. I ordered it from the following

You can also go to http://www.stopthefleas.com/fleas-on-pets.html
and they give you a lemon concoction to use.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Like I said I have never dealt with fleas so I am not familiar with what works.

Hey, I am with you...Another thing that drives me up the wall, is people who buy a dog, give him a dog house, and then just throw some food/water out to him, and never pet or spend any time with them. Some of them are freezing in the winter and their water freezes too. I cannot understand why anyone would get a pet and then leave it outside ALL ALONE...I thought they were for companionship. Of course, can you tell I am an animal lover from the word go? I LOVE THEM...I also love the picture of Denali...Just awesome beautiful dog...

I've known quite a few people around here to mistreat their animals, including man's best friend. I can't understand why people choose to abuse creatures that cannot defend themselves... I suppose it makes them feel bigger and better.
In our household we have two dogs, two cats, a bird and three goldfish.
I love them all dearly and the bird and the cats we rescued from bad homes.

Matilda, our bichon freise cross maltese, we bought her and we love her alot, Casey, Matilda's pup is a toy poodle cross. Casey was born and raised in my house, she's the light of my life, and I love her more then anything. Unfortuantly Casey has come down with Mange, of which she is getting treatment now and has to wear bandages and coats 24/7. (we change them daily) Also her father's side (toy poodle) have been known to be an agressive breed, a fine example is that her father was killed by his other doggy companions. Although I believe the owner could have prevented that tragic accident. Casey has to wear a muzzle whenever I walk her. She's become quite possesive of me. and only me. She wont allow the other pets on the bed, unless I tell her to leave them be, nor will she let a stranger in the house unless I tell her it is fine. She's extremly intelligent for a dog of her background, I give her a command and she does it without hesitation. I've recently taught her to pick up rubbish/clothing and put them either into the rubbish bin or the washing basket. One of her favourite things to do is carry notes. Instead of shouting into the other room, I'll write something on a peice of paper, fold it up and give it to casey with the command "call Casey" sudden'y she'll zoom off in the other room to give the note.

Unfortuantly she does have a habit of trying to keep the paper for herself. Her mother, Matilda, on the other hand.... wont bring the mail in or even hold paper in her mouth, she perfers to shred it into tiny peices.

I recently bought a ball for the girls (dogs). They adore it, mostly Matilda since she perfers playing rather as Casey perfers cuddling. You fill the ball with treats and put it on the floor and they nudge it with their nose til the goods fall out. it's fun to watch, as my dogs also love to play soccer, so the kick the large ball filled with treats around the room.

I don't punish my pets, because the look they give me afterwards makes me feel terrible, that and I believe in positive reinforcement. Like last night for example. I left my retainer sitting on the bedside table, go to the bathroom, come back and Casey has chewed the retainer. I was furious, because that cost a fair bit of money, but she didn't know what she'd done wrong, it looked like a toy to her, so I simply placed her on the floor in her bed and gave her a chew toy she could have.

I also planning on becoming a vet nurse, and then maybe a dog handler or dog behavourist. I love dogs, and cats too, but I perfer the larger animals as the seem easier to work with. In my oppinion

Hey does anyone know what the lumps on my dogs belly are? He's got about four or five, little round ones and I'm not sure what they could be....

My suggestion to you would be to have your vet check them out. There's no way of knowing if they are benign or not without your vet.

I would also suggest you do it as soon as possible in case they are not benign.

if you can pick up the lumps... well get your fingers round them they aren't a cancerous tumor, if you can't, they could possibly be a cancerous tumour.

Unsure weither I am right or not, picked this up from my biology teacher, but the best thing to do Beef, is go to the vets. Though they will cost a bit for the examination, but if it is something bad, then you may be in time to get them out. Cyrus is a pretty boy, you should take him to the vet's Beef. Don't wanna lose a beautiful doggy like him at his age.

I don't think that's accurate. My dog had some lumps that were very "loose" and some were cancerous and others were not.

The only way to know for sure is to have them removed and tested or biopsy them if possible.

yes I wasn't sure if I was right or not, but the best way is to go to a professional vet.
