Thread: E-Coli at Maria's

  1. Hungry E-Coli at Maria's

Maria's House of Pancakes at Waterloo has been shut down due to E-Coli. They have a week to get the place cleaned up for re-inspection. I hope they get to open again, they have good food.

The paperwork was posted on the entrance door. They have the water turned back on and have been working diligently to get the place cleaned and ready for re-inspection. This is what I know, I will not pass on the rumors until I have confirmation. I will not be affraid to eat there again, the food really is good.

You are right, they do carry good food there. I also will not be afraid to eat there in the future.

Sounds like a problem was discovered and is being well addressed. Can happen anywhere.

Not to gross anyone out, but a quick lesson on e-coli.

E-coli is caused by poor personal hygiene (i.e. hand washing.)
It doesn't mean it happened at the restaurant though, it is possible to have come in with the fresh produce, and this restaurant was the poor recipient.

2-3 years ago there were several e-coli outbreaks nationwide with fresh spinach, mescalun mix (salad greens) and bagged "pre-washed" ready to eat salad mixes.

If you have a weak stomache, you may want to stop HERE!

One case at that time was discovered to have originated on a farm (California?) that flooded. There was either a cow or hog farm nearby, that also flooded. The animal feces infected the produce. The produce was still picked, processed, and sold.

Not as common as many years ago, but it still happens. Think about it...

People who work the big produce farms, picking the produce, are generally paid by production, not hourly. When "nature calls" they do not take the time to find the nearest restroom, which could be miles away. They go where they are, or nearby, and hand washing facilities are not available.

This could apply to any produce you buy. This is why it is recommended to wash the produce that you buy! Better run restaurants wash the produce they receive before cooking or serving it. Grocery stores sell it as they receive it. Many commercial farms will "wash" their produce before shipping, but that is not always the case.

If your favorite beverage is garnished with fruit (lemon, lime, orange, etc.) you may want to ask if it was washed, or just ask for it without!

This is literally a case of Buyer Beware!

Just to clear things up a bit, the problem was apparently with the well serving the restaurant.

I would say that is an excellent example of our Health Department at work in this case.

James, I'm glad you were able to clarify the cause of the E-Coli.

Glad to hear it came from an outside source and not the restaurant's fault

When I asked if this was the real story or the official story I was told it was the "real official" story, but things were left out. They wouldn't go into detail and it really doesn't matter, if Bernie says the problem has been taken care of there is nothing to worry about. I'll be having breakfast there soon.

    and this one.

    Description

    E. coli bacteria may give rise to infections in wounds, the urinary tract, biliary tract, and abdominal cavity (peritonitis). This organism may cause septicemia, neonatal meningitis, infantile gastroenteritis, tourist diarrhea, and hemorrhagic diarrhea. An E. coli infection may also arise due to environmental exposure. Infections with this type of bacteria pose a serious threat to public health with outbreaks arising from food and water that has been contaminated with human or animal feces or sewage. This type of bacteria has been used as a biological indicator for safety of drinking water since the 1890s. Exposure may also occur during hospitalization, resulting in pneumonia in immunocompromised patients or those on a ventilator
