Default Hand Sanitizer Dangerous To Children

This is a true story from a mother,Her name is Kathy:

checked this out on Snopes.com, it's true,

Yesterday, my youngest daughter, Halle , who is 4, was rushed to

    > the emergency room by her father for being severely lethargic and

    > incoherent. He was called to her school by the school secretary for

    > being 'very VERY sick.'

    > He told me that when he arrived, Halle was barely sitting in the

    > chair. She couldn't hold her own head up and when he looked into her

    > eyes, she couldn't focus them.

    > He immediately scooped her up and rushed her to the ER, and then

    > called me.

    > When we got there, they ran blood test after blood test and did

    > x-rays, every test imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal,

    > nothing was out of the ordinary. The ER doctor told us that he had

    > done everything that he could do so he was sending her to Saint

    > Francis for further tests.

    > Right when we were leaving in the ambulance, her teacher came to

    > the ER and, after questioning Halle's classmates, we found out that

    > she had licked hand sanitizer off her hand..

    > Hand sanitizer, of all things.

    > But it makes sense. These days they have all kinds of different scents

    > and when you have a curious child, they are going to put all kinds of

    > things into their mouths.

    > When we arrived at Saint Francis, we told the ER doctor there to

    > check her blood alcohol level, and yes we did get weird looks, but

    > they did it. The results showed her blood alcohol level was 85% -- six

    > hours after we first took her.. There's no telling what it would have

    > been if we would have requested it at the first ER.

    > Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools have taken

    > this out of the classrooms of all the lower grade classes, but what's

    > to stop middle and high school kids from ingesting the stuff?

    > After doing research on the Internet, we have found out that it

    > only takes 3 squirts of the stuff to be fatal in a toddler. For her

    > blood alcohol level to be so high was to compare someone her size to

    > drinking something 120 proof. So please PLEASE don't disregard this

    > because I don't ever want anyone else to go through what my family and

    > I have gone through.

    > Please send this to everyone you know who has children or are going

    > to be having children. It doesn't matter what age.

Thank you for that important information RaceFan. It sounded so extreme, I had to double check the validity of that story. You are absolutely correct, this is a true story.

What with everyone using more and more of these hand sanitizers, trying to avoid the flu, it is a good time to be spreading this story.

You better read further down on scopes: The email has several factual errors.

It may have some errors, but it's still considered dangerous for children. I did read down further by the way before I posted .
I'm not saying ban hand snitizers by any means because it certainly does stop the spread of germs.

My belief is hand sanitizers promote sickness.

George Carlin once had a great diatribe about how people were too overprotective of their children, especially when it comes to germs. He argued that people NEED germs so our immune system gets a workout, otherwise when the time comes to REALLY need our antibodies to fight a bad disease, they won't be able to handle it.

I have to say, my aunt and uncle are germophobes who are constantly using hand sanitizer and both of them get sick with some regularity.

I wash my hands if they handle something dirty (or after I go to the bathroom), but otherwise I don't go out of my way to avoid exposure to microbes. My health is generally better and I usually avoid most of the sickness my wife and kids bring home from their respective job and school.

Granted, I'm home sick TODAY for the second time in as many months with flu-like symptoms, but these aren't usual circumstances.

My wife uses hand sanitizer way too much. She is obsessed with not getting sick. She was home sick from work 2 days this week. So much for hand sanitizer.

I guess that settles it for hand sanitizer.

I ate dirt occasionally as a kid, and my parents were never obsessed with making sure we were super clean (I mean, we washed our hands, but we didn't go crazy). My sister and I rarely get sick - I had the stomach flu for the first time in 12 years last Christmas. That's a pretty good track record. I have a friend who used to eat food off the ground, and last I knew she hadn't been sick since elementary school.

Some of it has to do with genetics, I think - my dad has a rock-solid immune system, too - but I think some of it has to do with building up a tolerance to the weaker little germs that come your way. If you wash too frequently, all you're doing is making it so that when a germ finally does get through, you have more of a chance of getting it.

I agree. Let's completely ignore the fact that death occurs somewhere in the .4 % range and up. Lets just go for the super-exaggeration and hope nobody is paying attention.

Even beyond the drunk factor, you can plain be allergic to alcohol, so even minute amounts (0.05%) can be dangerous - especially with babies and toddlers.

Putting in a number like "85%" detracts from what might a serious issue. I hate it when people blunt serious points by exaggerating.

I think you pretty much need at least 50% alcohol to make it effective.

Would people prefer they use isopropyl alcohol? Methyl alcohol?
