Is he taking John with him? Seriously, does the job pay that well? Nathan will clear this up for us.
That Jay Oberholtzer is the next Waterloo Town Marshal. What a slap in the face to all involved including Mr. Oberholtzer. Lose an election and resort to Waterloo. That's great!
Is he taking John with him? Seriously, does the job pay that well? Nathan will clear this up for us.

I didn't hear that he was taking John. They can't give current employees raises and I recently read they wern't replacing 1 guy who retired BUT I've heard they offered Jay quite a bit more money than the job pays now, and a take home car. He didnt even apply, he was approached by a Council Member.
Hmmm... the head of the Republican party in DeKalb County is offered a small time position at an inflated pay rate. Good thing it's not the Democrats, because the Republicans would be demanding a special prosecuter and a full criminal investigation. They would be calling it Chicago politics. Still waiting for Nathan to weigh in on this.

Wow, thats nice to know. What a bright idea hiring someone to use the Town until something political comes along or he retires which doesnt seem like it would be long. I hope this is only a Rumor. Sounds like unfair business to me.
I heard from an unreliable source that Jay turned them down.

Still no insight on this...
I'll believe it when I see it. You never know with this town. Would be the proper thing to do in his case but we will see.
I heard SEVERAL good applicants applied so why not choose from them?
It's truly interesting that Nathan has been silent on this. Being as he is normally right on top of anything involving Waterloo.![]()

I think it's interesting that politicians think they know what it takes to be a Police Officer. It's completely different lines of work and no one has a clue! Another bad decision as I'm assuming this rumor is true. The council as politicians may like Jay as we all know he is completely about politics. It will be another retirement job or a job until something political comes up.
A guy who personally insults his current employees for supporting another sheriff, to me, is about 10 steps below Waterloo himself.
What a wise decision Waterloo....
Jay had his interview Monday night. I just hope the town can see they have 2 guys within the Dept that would do a wonderful job. The spot they just filled was filled by a reserve from another Dept when they had guys from their own reserve unit that have been there many years that also applied and were not given the spot. I found this to be a load of crap considering some of the guys have been there 6,7, even 8 years and were over looked after they have given their time to the city for free. They are going to end up with no officers and having to start over from scratch and if that is what they want then keep up the good work if you want to keep the guys that have been there for your town get your heads out of the clouds and show then that you want them there.
6, 7 and 8 years of being a reserve is a long time of dedication for an unpaid position to a town who basically just told them they didn't care about them. I understand there was 2 people who applied for the Marshal spot from within the department. The last Marshal was "outside" and that whole situation just seems off from what I have read and heard. There has to be more to it. The Marshal before that was arrested on OWI , but he fooled the people who hired him. The officers who applied within, both have years of experience with the department and know the employees and have worked hard for the Town. They have working knowledge of this department and have proven their dedication to the Town. If you can't advance in this Town why stay here? I have seen officer's come and go for years and this is why. I don't care if your a Police Officer, Meter Reader, Town Manager, Council Member, or simply mow the Town property, you need to trust your co-workers, and superiors to back you 100%. Jay in charge and all thats gone. Why not speak to current police officer's and reserves? Get opinions. This is a dangerous job. Officer's were shot at during the hostage situation, it could have been a horrible situation. Trust is a big thing.
Jay might know how to do desk work, but I wonder just how many arrests, tickets, cases he has done in the past 5 years??? The Sheriff's Department needs a guy like him. But when it comes to little Waterloo they need someone active and willing to do physical work in that position. Not a desk sitter. I don't plan on seeing Marshal Jay taking a drunk off the streets to keep my family safe anytime soon!
Maybe the town should go to the meetings or send them letters, or call letting them know how you feel. The people from Waterloo are the ones that pick who is on the council if they think so little of the officers they have maybe they also need new blood in their positions.
Does any one know if they have hired a town marshal yet? I was curious and havent heard much in awhile? Any one know who was or is in the running?
I came across this topic and after reading the threads I had to create an account to voice my opinion.
First of all, I know the 2 officers from within that applied personally. They are both outstanding police officers. They each have several years put in at the department. One of them recieved National recognition for Police Officer of the year a few years back. I am now hearing they are going to advertise for this position again in the Fort Wayne newspaper to get more applicants. I think this is one of the biggest mistakes that could be made. Waterloo has 2 great officer's who have each dedicated their lives to this Town, who are both capable of doing this job and are more than qualified for the position, yet you continue to seek other officer's. You had a process, you had applicants, qualified applicants. You have 2 current employees (that applied) working overtime to keep your streets clean, you children safe and the crime down while you people sit around and wait for someone better who hasn't made a difference in your lives today. These officer's have by committing to themselves to your Town, your streets and your citizens. Have you put yourselves in their shoes? Have you tried to understand how they feel when they break up the family fight down your street, or remove your neighbors abused children from the home or taken a drunk off of the street your children drive down to come home? Each time these officer's are called its to help someone, or to make a difference in someones life. They have done an excellent job and they deserve more credit than what they have recieved from the Town at this point.
People need to remember this is Waterloo. A very small department. One of these inside officer's deserve a chance to move up. I would think the Town would want that. It's time to show all officer's on this department they mean something to you and that they are needed.
hindsight could be 20-20 here. If the town of Waterloo feels that there are issues that need fixed within the department then why pick a person already there?? On the other hand theses officers could do a great job. I have seen a outsider come in and work very well, I have also seen a "insider" get the job and fail miserably. If you feel this strongly about these officers then thank them for the job they do and hope the town can see this.
I too feel strongly about promoting from within, but if the issues are too deep to fix then an outsider has no bias one way or the other on these issues and can form his own judgement on what to do and how to run the department.
You can't fix something unless you have to ability to. So what they may see as a broken department, really has came together in the past 2 months. To notice that, the Town members needs to "see" it and in order to "see" it they need to stop by, ride along, talk with the officer's and not hide and keep everything a big secret. They have no idea what these officer's do day to day and that they are whats making this department survive. Until they understand that, how can they seek people who are "more qualified" when they are unsure what "qualified" is.
No matter who it may be thats hired, they have 2 inside that are qualified and several applicants from other departments that are qualified. They need to choose the best from the applicant's that applied and if it doesnt work out go from there with another hiring process. Its the fair way to do it. Anyone of these guys deserve a chance. They have earned it and they met the deadline on the hiring process.
So Jay was denied another job after he turned Waterloo down, and now he comes back begging Waterloo for a job. Everything thats supposidly a big secret, isn't really a secret. The whole Town is gonna suffer now. Jay had another interview with the Town Tuesday and supposidly accepted. Way to go Waterloo, you people are STUPID! Just wait, something better to Jay will come along and you will be back to square one just like you were for the two weeks Jay was applying else where.
Just politics as usual. Now the town will have a grass cop. It was probably a favor to give him a pud job until he can retire, which shouldn't be long. I'd bet Nathan wants so bad to comment on this he's about to burst, but I understand why he can't.
"You don't have to agree with me, it's ok for you to be wrong." A.R.Rogance
When it comes to Waterloo Police Department it's not about politics to those officer's. Its about serving the community with dignity, pride and respect. The Town board has taken advantage of their power, and the money they are saving while waiting so long to hire. It is unfair to those officer's working hard to keep the department functioning for the citizens. They have done every employee with WPD wrong. I hope to see the council replaced at this next election. Select council members can't even control their mouths when it comes to not talking. So Nathan, good job! At least you accomplished that. Why can't the rest of the council member's do the same?
