Default The D.A.R.E. progam a waste of money?

I'll repost my last post that was taken down. I know that Officer Slone likes to get kids in trouble for less then a stem or seed. I have had this happen to my kid at Dekalb High School. When I asked to see the pot they found in my kids car Officer Slone told me that he forgot his key to the safe and could not show me. I have been told that this is not the first time that he can't produce the Pot or evidence.
I have said that this money would do much better spent in the elemetery schools not in High School where if you have not got to the kids by 5TH grade, your wasting the money...

Tell me what you think before the Police Chief calls the Star to take this down....

The actual D.A.R.E. program was pulled several years ago. Many departments continued with the COPS grant to place officers in schools. This is a wonderful tool. It prevents theft, bullying, and leaves an officer in the school to prevent school shootings and fights. Arresting someone for dope is an added bonus. You must realize that what is collected for evidence is secured until court. He must have a chain of custody for this item. He is NOT required to show it to you, period. He IS obligated to take it into a courtroom when the trial date arrives. Though I am not anywhere close to you, even though a person is innocent until proven guilty, I would hope you have an adult conversation with your kid. Stem or seed, its still unlawful possession and I appreciate him removing this from our schools and parking areas.

Chiguy65...I believe you should be more concerned about your child than what is happening with tax money spent on DARE. IF your child has been accused of having a stem/seed or pot in their possession at a local school...this is a BIG problem for your child and yourself. IF mustard seeds are illegal, this means our children are not allowed to carry mustard seeds to school!

Is it not the job of parents to teach our children how to survive sucessfully in this world of ours? One of the most basic meanings of success is to remain a free person who is law abiding and capable of being educated and employed. Breaking the laws of our community can very quickly deprive anyone of these basic rights.

Chiguy...give it some more thought...is it not a better thing to encourage your children to never possess a seed or stem and to pursue larger goals for their future? Perhaps, good grades, participating in sports/creative art/music, etc would be great alternatives?

I mean no harm here Chiguy...just reading this posting caused me concern. If a child is carrying a seed or a stem, his/her thoughts are probably focused on the plant. I'm not here to argue or defend the evils of the plant. I'm here to say...this plant most likely doesn't offer your child the best future possible for him/her? Should the focus not be on your child and their abilities more than their affection for seeds and stems?

Best wishes, I know raising young teens is not an easy task!

This statement in and of itself is troubling........ Why are you crying foul over your son/daughter getting busted for having an illegal narcotic and attempting to place blame where it does not belong. This is one of the major problems in this country now ..... Its not the guy who smokes dope fault its the cops or its not his fault it was the alcohol... you get my drift. If the officer involved is wrong then take it to court. IF YOU DO ......... please follow up on this post to let us know what happened. ( something tells me you will not but hey o well ). The fact that your son or daughter may be involved with something illegal is not what you are complaining about but instead you chose to attack the DARE program which is fine as everyone has a right to their opinion but this is not the first time I have seen you complain about cops and what they are doing so then again it does not supprise me.

I will be the first one to always say " ask questions " but your posts lead me to believe you have a bias against law enforcement to start with.

Once again something is posted here before you even have your facts straight. Officer Slone is acutually Deputy Slone and is a member of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department as is his partner, Deputy Wisel. They are not D.A.R.E. Officers, they are School Resource Officers and are responsible to handle all incidents that arise in all of the schools in DeKalb County, Elementary through High School. Unlike the Allen County School system where there might be one SRO for each school, these two spend each day working among all schools in the county and are pretty busy from what I've seen. Maybe if the "Kids" ,as you put it, had a little better direction at home, they could spend more time on education and less time on dealing with children who bring illegal substances to school.

I really don't think the Police Chief will have this removed since it has nothing to do with his department, which you should have known if you talked to Deputy Slone as you stated. You would've seen he wears a brown uniform that says "DeKalb County Sheriff" in big letters on each shoulder, not a blue one that says "Auburn Police Department". Sounds to me like you have an issue with the police no matter what agency they work for.

I personally liked the D.A.R.E program when I was growing up. But I did have it in Elementary School, not in high school. I do think that it is more effective to kids at a younger age than teenagers. Kids in elementary school seem to soak information right up and learn more. Once you get to high school learning isn't "cool" and the drug prevention talks go in one ear and out the other. Prevention at a younger age is the better way to go.

    Thanks Helen,
My son was not smoking pot. Thats why I said that Slone makes stuff up to try and get himself to look good to continue to have a job... and by the way I have 4 children and it is tough sometimes to raise them up right, but mostly I love being their Dad and helping them out.

You know what I think is worse than drugs? People's obsession with them.

Do you know WHY people think most drug laws and warnings are ********? Because most drug laws and warnings ARE ********!

When I was a kid, we had anti-drug propaganda shoved down our throats on an almost daily basis at school, on television, in our comic books and EVEN IN OUR VIDEO GAMES. We couldn't escape it. We heard all the negatives about drugs... how they kill, how drug users never prosper, how families are destroyed.

Then we grew up and saw that most drug users DON'T die from drugs, or at least, not from the drug itself but rather all the associated dangers of dealing with an illegal substance (murders, police shootings, robberies, etc.) which is not the fault of drugs, but by how they are "controlled".

We grew up and saw friends or family members who took drugs become successful, whether or not they gave their habit up... or they replaced their illegal substances with the many legal versions that offer the same ability to forget how lousy life can be (alcohol being the biggest of the hypocrisy drugs).

Hell, we grew up with Ronald Reagan's wife admonishing kids to "Just Say No" only to learn his vice-president's children, grandchildren and various nieces and nephews were illegal drug users.

With that amount of lies (no matter how "well-meaning") is it any wonder my generation is so jaded about the "dangers" of drug abuse?
