Austen Brauker - Tappa - Blue Heron 1.jpgAngola born artist, Austen Brauker, receives the honor of having his artwork used as the logo for the National Congress of American Indians gathering. It was an enormous gathering of Natives from all the tribes across the United States. There were 1000’s of people (many were chiefs, or council members, or other elected official representatives) all carrying around his artwork, an image of a blue heron, proudly strapped across their shoulders as they sauntered through the streets of downtown Milwaukee. The heron was beautifully printed in natural tones on the side of the recycled NCAI conference bags. The unique bird also adorned the cover of the NCAI conference brochure and was used as a silhouette throughout the conference agenda and assorted materials handed out to the registered participants. A full page about the artist, and his process of using paper bags with melted Crayola crayons, appeared in this publication, following letters from numerous state governors and an address from the president of the NCAI. Austen was given a table at the marketplace and did quite well selling his art, music CD’s and printed copies of both his completed screenplays, “White Buffalo” and “Homunculus”. He also took along three custom decorated guitars to display. The National Congress of American Indians has an embassy in Washington D.C. where the original art will hang in their offices for the international community to enjoy.
