Default Who will you vote for in the Mayoral Election?

Two candidates - Tonya Hoeffel and Tom Kleeman. Which one do you think is best for Garrett?

I feel Tonya is the best choice to be our next mayor. Her plan to move Garrett into the future, offer the opportunity of more community involvement, true fiscal responsibility and a new board of works are some of the reasons I support her. She sees changes that need made and is willing to make them. If Tom is elected things will stay the same, and the good ole boys club stays intact. I don’t feel this is in the best interest of Garrett.

Tonya has my vote. I agree with TLC, its time for a change.

any other thoughts from my fellow Garrett citizens?

Does it seem true that Tom Kleeman = status quo and stagnation and Tonya Hoeffel = Growth and Change?

From what the candidates have released and discussed, that is my take.

Sounds like Hoeffel is going to clean house on January 1st and fire everyone in the city positions and make them all reapply for their jobs. Sounds like she has an axe to grind with everyone that works for the city right now.

Sounds like statements were misinterpreted or not presented properly. During the Mayor elects run for office she stated a new board of works and new police chief were some of her goals. Obviously the majority of voters agreed to these needs. There is nothing uncommon about an incoming official changing their board of works. There is nothing wrong with eliminating an inept police chief and replacing him. The City Planner (or manager) position is currently open. That’s 4 openings not even close to a majority of city jobs. The good ole boys club needed removed and I for one am happy to see the changes coming.

It's not uncommon for a new administration to make some changes, it happens at all levels of government. I expected there will only be a few changes in management positions and hopefully she will start weeding out those non-productive workers, after all it's not unreasonable to expect a day's work for a day's pay or at least a close facsimile. To her credit she was upfront on changes she felt was needed for the benefit of Garrett and its residents and no I don't think she has an axe to grind, but was in positions to see what changes are needed. Being a resident of Garrett for over 40 years it was apparent to me that the good ole boy syndrome was alive and well in Garrett. Hopefully new employees will be based on qualifications and not friend or family relationships.

This is what was said on her Facebook page.

Did you know that Tonya will be the first Mayor to open up all city positions and boards to an application process? Like if you look forward to an more open and welcoming city government on January 1st!
Am I reading it wrong in saying that she is making EVERYONE employeed by the city reapply for their jobs? With any new mayor I would expect some changes, but not a complete overhaul of the WHOLE city on January 1st.

Does she realize that she only won the election by 50 votes? If she ruffles 26 feathers she won't last long in the position.

I think you are reading it wrong. If you are familiar with Garrett politics nepotism seems to be a way of life in hiring city employees. I think she means all future hirings will be based on qualifications, education, experience, etc and not because you are a member of the family. However, I have no problem in hiring a family member if they meet the requirements and are the best qualified for the position.

I admit I could be reading it wrong, but I interpret it differently. What I’m reading is, open positions will be filled by an application process in which any person interested can throw their “hat” into the ring. Where traditionally the, Mayor in this case picks the new hire with no opportunity of somebody not friends or family being considered.

I certainly hope you both are right or else I would be certain she will be a one term mayor. The thing about Garrett is, if you ruffle the wrong feather it could be very hazardous!

Not looking for employment I never really thought about it but how are job openings announced and what are the application processes? Did a quick search on the city's website and found nothing. Just out of curiosity went to Auburn's website and found a job opening, a copy of a job application form and submission requirements.

Unfortunately I know the answer to this. There typically are no postings for open positions, to make it better there have been NO openings and still people are hired. Seeing that the current administration is the true epitome of the “good ole boys club” I’m sure you understand what has been happening.

I think it was those "ruffled feathers" that booted out the current admin.

    Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
