Soldiers posing with body parts
In today's New York Times, there is an article regarding our soldiers posing with body parts of dead suicide bombers.
I understand that war is horrible...I know that being from the left, everyone expects me to be soft hearted...yet...this story does NOT hit me the same as the Aabu Ghraib incident. Those prisoners of war were alive there. These suicide bombers have already proven themselves to be murders and willing to kill innocent citizens.
Someone commented as follows on the New York Times article covering this topic. I found my self in agreement with their following comment:
If you're going to kill someone, for any reason, you already have no respect for life. We TRAIN these men to be killers. We dull their sensibilities so when it comes time to pull the trigger there is no hesitation. They are put in a kill or be killed situation where the enemy is trumped up to be satan on Earth and then we gasp when they don't show proper respect for dead body parts?!?! Give me a break.
My only frustration with this incident is that after abu ghraib, soldiers are still photographing things that would obviously incite anger. I guess it just goes to show that when you've got a target on your back 24/7 you lose sight of what "normal" is. I'm sure that same kind of loss of reality is going on on both sides of the conflict. That must be why, to me anyway, all those Israelis and Palestinians seem totally nuts.
