Steel Dynamics in Butler uses more electricity in 24 hours of normal production than the entire city of South Bend uses in a month.

This explains the need for those overwhelming towers supporting their power lines sprinkled across our farm fields. Wonder how many times they loose power after a storm?

It takes an awful lot of energy to melt steel. Always did. Right around here, we aren't blessed with an hydroelectric energy source, so it comes in on high intensity lines from further away, and some energy is lost in the transmission.

Storms don't seem to be that much of a problem as they are on a dedicated line. Usually it's on site equipment failures, not long ago caused by a suicidal raccoon. Not surprisingly, when they do have a problem the power company has people there in less than an hour.

Does that include all industry located in South Bend, or just residential use? At any rate, it's one of those interesting statistics.
