Homey, NO ONE spends hundreds of thousands of dollars based on someone's "word". Not ever. That's cluelessness of superhuman proportions.
Again, what does this say about Kruse? He's the sort to get arrested for fraud for not paying his clients, so what kind of scam was he trying to pull with that building?
It makes him look less like a respectable businessman than a somewhat talented con artist. It probably runs in that family.

What will be the headline in the paper when Dean has all his debt's paid in full ? Will it be buried deep inside the paper?
Had he been in jail he couldn't have paid these people back in full. Sometimes Jail is not the answer.
But Dean Kruse is an honorable man. He should be allowed to remain out of jail so that he can keep writing guest editorials/opinion pieces for KPC about how we need to get tough on real criminals and people on welfare. The people that he owes money to really don't need the money that bad. Besides what does a contract really mean between friends?
Well there's an idea! Save the tax payer's of this country money by not sending these people to prison and make them work to pay back their debt. But keep sending people to prison that kill people, hurt people, those kind of crimes. Geeeeeeeez how simple could that be.

Maybe this is a new 'pilot program'....a precedent.![]()
For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it. - Patrick Henry
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
~ Thomas Jefferson
That "sometimes" is when you're rich, right? If someone robbed you would you say " Oh no, don't put him in jail, leave him out so he can rob someone else to pay me back."? If he were in jail he could have paid people back by liquidating his personal fortune. But, on paper he's probably a pauper.

Haven't followed this story except on The Fence Post. Where and when was Kruse convicted of theft?
I didn't know about it until you did and I can't comment on a pending case!!!!!
He had a warrant for his arrest in Pennsylvania (I think) for not paying his clients after keeping the money due them for selling their vehicles. This is a criminal matter.
He had his auctioneer license revoked for not paying his clients. This is a civil matter.
He has been sued several times by former clients for not paying them (pocketing the money from selling their vehicles). In this instance, the clients chose to pursue this through civil court rather through criminal court.
I am reminded of a former attorney who was arrested, convicted and served several years in prison because he took money during real estate transactions and didn't disburse the funds as they should have been.
Of course, HE wasn't related to an Indiana Republican politician, so too bad for him.

According to the Pennsylvania court system, the pre-trial conference is set for October 1, 2012 (http://ujsportal.pacourts.us/DocketSheets/CP.aspx). I expect Kruse to have paid what he owes by then to avoid an actual court hearing.
The only thing I find through a criminal search for him here in Indiana is several citations for speeding or other driving infractions. He's got a ton of civil cases against him going back to 1982, however, and many are civil plenary which likely means he didn't honor a contract (i.e., didn't pay proceeds from an auction to his client).
Has be been "convicted"? Doesn't look like it, but clearly he is a shady businessman who has benefited from his familial and political connections in the state.
Otherwise, why wouldn't DeKalb County's prosecutor have filed charges against him when he so clearly defrauded so many people?
Incidentally, Earl Ford McNaughton hasn't seen the inside of a jail cell, either. Funny, huh?
