MONGO — The Northeastern Indiana Trout Association and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area will host a youth fishing event on Saturday, June 2.
The event is held annually at Rainbow Pit in the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area. Rainbow Pit is located on the south side of C.R. 300N in LaGrange County, about four miles west of Mongo. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. Fishing starts at 9 a.m., continuing until 10:30 a.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a brief ceremony recognizing the participants.
The event is geared for youth up to the age of 16. Participants must pre-register by calling the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area Office at 367-2164. The free event will be limited to 25 youngsters. An adult must accompany the children but will not be counted for registration purposes. Walk-ins will not be accepted.
The DNR has designated the weekend as a statewide free fishing weekend. Adults are not required to have a fishing license or trout stamp to fish with or assist a child. Mentors from NEITA and the Pigeon River staff will be on site to assist.
Fishing equipment will be available if needed. Bait will be provided.
