BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University’s bass fishing team has qualified for the ESPN National Championship.

The team includes Steven Bressler of Fremont and Dustin Vaal of Bloomington. They finished fifth out of 28 boats at the Mississippi River ESPN College Bass Super Regional at La Crosse, Wis. May 18-19.

It was Bressler’s first time fishing the Mississippi River.

“We felt like of all the tournaments this would be our weakest one,” he said. “Up in Wisconsin, the Mississippi fishes nothing like southern reservoirs that we are used to. Not to mention the boat we fished out of did not have any graph charts on it, so we were unable to fish deep like we usually like to.”

The team fished shallow at the bank.

“All of our keeper fish came on Team Supreme Buzz Baits and senkos. We figured out a couple key areas that had fish stacked in them and continued to pound them throughout the tournament,” said Bressler. Their take was 27 pounds, 1 ounce.

Bressler and Vaal will be at the Pepsi Open on Kentucky Lake next.

Bressler said he was looking forward to ESPN Nationals, from which the winner will advance to the Bassmaster Classic.
