ANGOLA — Derek Craig of Angola has been nominated as the Delta Waterfowl volunteer of the year.
Craig has been chosen as one of the final seven people in the volunteer of the year contest, which relies on public voting. Votes can be cast at deltawater fowl.org/volunteeraward.
“I have to admit that while it is an honor, at first I was a little concerned about the nomination because I am just one of about 15 on our northeastern Indiana committee who volunteers and works hard to pull off extremely successful banquets, the largest youth program in all of Delta Waterfowl, veterans projects, habitat projects and other local causes. The entire committee is what makes it click,” said Craig.
However, he encouraged people to vote for him because of the benefits it will bring to the area and the pride it will bring to the whole Northeast Indiana Chapter of Delta Waterfowl Committee.
“It is a team effort and the award will be acknowledged as a team award, should I be fortunate to win,” Craig said.
Among the accomplishments of the chapter since its inception in 2008 are $7,000 in local scholarships, over $100,000 raised through banquets, over 800 Canada geese safely relocated and federally banded, over 300 mallard hen nesting tubes constructed and installed and over 200 wood duck boxes constructed and installed. More than 1,600 area youth have attended the Duck Day education program through Steuben County school districts.
The local chapter has also sponsored an Eagle Scout and his waterfowl related project and supported a local cancer organization and veterans.
