Retired Air Force Serviceman Bill Lee shows a 16-inch crappie caught on a lake on Barksdale Air Force Base, La.

For reasons even they can’t explain, Louisiana fishermen call black and white crappies white perch. It makes no sense since they aren’t even in the perch family, but I let it slide every year because the same Cajuns also let me fish with them for the freakishly huge fish.

Unless you are preaching to the choir, writing about gun control is a risky venture for an outdoor writer. In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., shootings and the resultant national debate on guns, however, I feel compelled to add my 2 cents.
