LEECH LAKE, Minn. — I have traveled to northern Minnesota every year for the past forty years in search of the best multi-species fishing in the Midwest. With so many more lakes than Indiana and fewer people, it has always been money and time well spent.

A common snapping turtle crosses a path during mating season. The common snapper, smooth softshell turtle and the spiny softshell turtle are still considered game animals in Indiana. Law protects all other types of native turtles.

Like most amphibians in Indiana, common snapping turtles spend most of their lives hidden from view. Content to scour the mucky, weedy bottoms of lakes and swamps, these prehistoric creatures rarely expose themselves but for one time each year.

A trail camera caught this fall photo of two Indiana does and their fawns on Don Mulligan’s farm.

Balancing the needs and desires of the hunting and non-hunting public is one of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources most difficult jobs, especially when it requires making changes to the way they manage our deer herd.
