What is accepted and how to prepare Items


Aluminum (Soft drink and beer cans, aluminum foil, pie or dinner trays) — Rinse. No food debris.

Cardboard, Corrugated (Corrugated box board in which cases of grocery items, appliances and other products may be packaged) — Break down boxes and flatten. Keep separate from newsprint.

Clipboard (Food cartons, shoe boxes, tissue boxes, tablet backs, etc.) — Remove wax/paper insert from food carton. Flatten.

Newsprint (Newspapers, telephone books with the covers removed and other publications using newsprint) — Remove glossy, color magazine and advertising sections. Bundle in grocery bags or tie with sturdy string. Keep dry.

Plastic - 1 & 2 (Milk, water and juice jugs, soft drink bottles, colored detergent bottles. Look for symbols 1 or 2 on bottom of containers) — Rinse and flatten. Remove all lids, pumps and rings. No motor oil containers, plastic wraps or bags, plastic tubs and bowls with food still in them. No containers marked 3 through 7.

Tin-Steel-Cans (Fruit, vegetable and other containers. Tin, or steel, cans usually have side seams and will be attracted to a magnet.) — Rinse. Remove labels.

Magazines (Glossy magazines and catalogs) — Bundle in grocery bags. Separate from newsprint. Keep dry.

Glass (Colored or clear bottles or jars used as containers for food and drinks.) — Remove lids and any metal rings. Rinse.

Separate clear glass from colored glass.

Household batteries (Household batteries including rechargeable and button. No car batteries, please.) — Drop loose into designated box at the end of the unit.

Yard waste compost facilities


• Ligonier Composting Facility, Gerber Street, north of railroad tracks, west side. Open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the spring. Summer hours haven’t been set yet. Call 894-4761 with questions.

• Kendallville Composting Facility, West Wayne Street, across from Wastewater Treatment Facility. Open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.

• Kendallville Transfer Site, Weston Avenue. Leaves and limbs can be disposed of for free. All other items cost $12 a load. Open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday.

Northeast Indiana Solid Waste Management District (SWMD): 2320W — 800S, P.O. Box 370, Ashley, IN 46705-0370; (800) 777-5462.

The district receives wastes such as paints, oil, tires, appliances, computers and batteries at its facility on Fridays from 8 a.m.-noon April 15-Nov. 15. There is a cost for disposing of some items, so residents are urged to call the district first.
